Known as the most versatile hand plane, the No. 5 jack plane has been smoothing and prepping flat surfaces for over a hundred years-a true jack-of-all-planes. Within the Stanley numbering system, Jack planes are medium-length planes. They are longer than smoothing planes, which makes them long enough to level out bumps and light enough to use for extended periods of time. At 14" long and 2" wide, the No. 5 is used for dimensioning, to true up rough edges and prepare it for fore or jointer planes. With cast-iron bodies with precision-ground soles and sides, these planes are not only heavy-duty. Their ultra-flat surfaces allow you to plane your workpieces with reliable accuracy. The jack plane has an adjuster that allows advancement and retraction of the blade. The blade can also adjust side-to-side with another. The accuracy of this mechanism allows you to adjust the cutting iron to a virtually "zero" mouth opening. This allows for the finest shavings-even on the most difficult of woods. The blade is made from high carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 60-62 Rockwell C, and precision ground to 3mm thick. The single-piece design of the cap iron offers rigid clamping.
